The trouble had been brewing at the ground. This is from solicitor’s notes for the case of a City lad who was nicked, who I shall call JS:

At some stage, about 150 people ran down the terraces towards the fence separating the terrace from the pitch. Once over that fence, had they crossed it, it would have given them access to Molineux stand. A short time before, there had been a rumpus between the visitors and the home supporters in Molineux stand.

The police officers moved forward to stop people crossing over the fence in front of the visitors’ stand. It is alleged that JS was part of the group of 150. One officer indeed pushed JS away from the fence, the officer then turned away, heard JS say, ‘Fucking bastards,’ and JS pushed back towards the fence. He also encouraged the others to do the same. The officer heard him say this, the others there were not so noisy that they could not distingush what JS was saying, therefore they moved in to arrest him.

He was initially taken to the police room below Molineux stand, where he was searched and found to be in possession of fifty small, green cards, with, ‘You’ve just been tuned in by MCFC Mayne Line Motorway Service Crew’ on them. The officer in the case understands that ‘tuned’ means beaten or thumped. Prosecution’s solicitor mentioned that there is a gang going round the Wolverhampton area that leave cards on their victims, saying word to the effect that you have just been cut up by whatever the gang is. The police are clearly suggesting to the magistrates that the cards found on JS have a similar meaning. It is clearly open to interpretation.

Sergeant Box at Red Line Police Station, near the ground, merely charges the defendant, who, however, says in reply to the charge, ‘Sorry.’
